In a statement, People Before Profit have hit out at recent reports that the government are ‘spinning’ the housing issue and that there is enough land to build 46,000 homes. These revelations show that the government is trying to fool people into thinking that they have the housing crisis under control. This is clearly not the case.It also reveals how detached the government are from the issue affecting normal people. People Before Profit demand that the government commit to a radical council housing initiative and to introduce rent controls. The current government initiative promised in October has proven to be a false dawn, yet another time the government have be shown to lie in order to try to get public opinion in the lead up to an election.
People Before Profit spokesperson, Cllr Bríd Smith, said “the government spinning the issue of housing is a cruel example of how detached these career politicians are from the daily trials and tribulations of ordinary, working people”.
“What we need as a matter of absolute urgency is a radical plan that will help to solve the housing crisis, which has reached epidemic levels. Currently we have 100,000 families on housing lists, rents soaring through the roof and a homelessness crisis that is spiralling out of control. We cannot have a proper housing plan that is provided by private landlords, we need an emergency council housing building plan”. said Cllr Smith.
“The most important requirement for a council housing initiative is that it needs to be done now”. said Cllr Smith.
People Before Profit are running the Right2Housing Conference on Saturday March 28 from 10.30- 4.30 in the Academy Plaza Hotel on Cathal Brugha Street.
