Dun Laoghaire Council Management supporting crazy plans for an €18 million berth for luxury Cruise ships in Dun Laoghaire Harbour without any discussion with councillors.
In a statement this morning, Cllr Melisa Halpin (People Before Profit), expressed serious concern at Council’s involvement in crazy plan for an €18 million new berth for luxury cruise liners in Dun Laoghaire Harbour.
This berth is to accommodate cruise ships 300 meters long and 72 meters high (Liberty Hall is 59 meters).
In recent weeks Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company have announced their intention to submit plans to An Bord Pleanala to build a new berth in the middle of the harbour.
This plan is being supported by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, despite no published research into the specific benefits these ships might have for Dun Laoghaire.
Cllr Melisa Halpin said: “I am disgusted to see the council management supporting this mad cap project without any discussion at all with the councillors.
Not only are they a partner in the Dun Laoghaire Cruise Stakeholder Group that is proposing the project but now it transpires that a senior official in the council flew to Miami on 11 March to look into the cruise business. None of these plans were discussed with councillors.”
Cllr Halpin added:”it is a total disgrace and truly exposes the undemocratic nature of the council that plans to be involved in an €18 million project are not even brought to councillors for their information.”
On 9 March I asked the question below at the council meeting. Considering the respondent to the question left the country two days later on his junket to Miami to look into cruise business, and that he is also involved in the Dun Laoghaire Cruise Stakeholder Group that is backing the project, I think, in the interests of full disclosure, there should have been a more comprehensive answer.
This culture of junkets and secrecy in the Council has to end.”
Questions submitted to council: “To ask the Chief Executive to give full details of any and all research that has been carried out into the benefits of cruise ship business for Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County?
Reply: The Council is aware that Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company has commissioned research into the benefits of Cruise business and that it proposes to use this research in support of its forthcoming application to An Bord Pleanála for a Cruise Berth facility in the harbour.
