In a statement, People Before Profit have re-iterated their recent call to the Minister for the Environment, Alan Kelly, to declare the housing crisis a national emergency.

Brid-Smith - CopyPeople Before Profit, housing spokesperson, Cllr. Brid Smith said: “As today’s figures released by the Department of the Environment confirm, the housing crisis is spiralling out of control and has gone beyond an emergency at this stage. We need the government to stop for once and for all skirting around the issue and act now. We are calling on the Minister to take this stand, to insist to the EU that this is in fact an emergency and is set to get even worse with winter on the horizon”.

Cllr. Smith concluded:  “In the past week we have heard other prominent homelessness activists calling for an emergency to be called by the Minister. When the Dail comes back into session after the summer recess tomorrow it is time he faced the seriousness of the situation and did the right thing by the hundreds of thousands of households and individuals at the heart of the housing crisis”.

People Before Profit will be supporting the Right2Housing Protest at Dail Eireann6pm on Tuesday 22nd September.
