People Before Profit TD, Richard Boyd Barrett will be questioning the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Alan Kelly at 9.30am tomorrow,Thursday 23rd April, when he will have two priority questions taken during question time in the Dail.
Deputy Boyd Barrett will be raising housing and homelessness questions despite three of the questions he submitted, which related to the money spent by local authorities on housing homeless people in hotel accommodation being disallowed by the Ceann Comhairle’s office yesterday. A formal complaint was submitted to the Ceann Comhairle today.
A number of people affected by the housing crisis will be in attendance in the Dail gallery to watch the debate and will speak at a press conference directly afterwards at the gates of Leinster House (KIldare St.) at 10.15am.
Speakers at the press conference will include:
Ashling Hederman, a lone parent of two with mental health issues. Ashling has been on the housing list for nine years and has twice been at risk of homelessness due to issues with rent allowance.
Peter McDonagh has been homeless for three years and currently lives in a homeless hostel.
Nereko Lakuona is living in private rented accommodation and her rent has recently been increased by €200 per month which brings her over the rent cap meaning she is is at risk of homelessness if she can’t find new accommodation within the rent cap.
These speakers and others will be available for comment tomorrow.
