People Before Profit has organised a conference that will take place on 28th March as a first step in bringing people together and building a campaign to demand immediate action on the housing crisis. The Housing Action Campaign in the 1970’s was a campaign of People Power that forced the government to build 60,000 council houses. We need a similar campaign today.
In October, the government announced a new plan to tackle the crisis and not only has nothing happened, the plan itself us hopelessly flawed. Rather than announce an emergency council building programme, the government has decided to pour money into housing those in need via private landlords.
With over 100,000 families on housing lists across the country, record numbers of people living in utterly inadequate emergency accommodation and rents spiralling out of control, we urgently need a radical housing campaign to pressure the government to build council houses and introduce rent controls.
Speakers at the conference include Fr. Peter McVerry, Dr. Andrew McClaren, TCD, Eileen Short (National Chairperson of Defend Council Housing-East London), Louise Bayliss (SPARK), Dublin Tenants Association and Richard Boyd Barrett TD.
